List Building Basics
Sometimes, internet marketing success just comes down to focusing on the list building basics. When I first started with this internet marketing journey, I had no list. I had no customers. I started at “0” just like most of the people I talk to. How did I get started?
I started by focusing on list building basics. I didn’t have any fancy super secret apps, downloads, tricks, or wi-fi kung-fu.
What Are The List Building Basics?
For starters, you need to have something to offer. Believe me, that may seem as silly to you reading it as it did to me when I wrote it. But I am actually approached by people on a daily basis asking me how to make money with email marketing and they have nothing to sell. Others are already involved with a business, own a business, or have a product or service to sell. I can help the second group. The first group needs to find or create something to sell.
If you don’t have anything to sell, you’re not going to make money, online or offline. So, the first items in List Building Basics is: Have something to sell.
There are many many options available and we show you how to find some exciting options in our free Ebook:
In my case, I’ve used email marketing to sell physical goods such as coffee and online services such as email marketing and advertising. We have customers around the world using email marketing to sell everything from entertainment to food, internet marketing services to books, musical instruments to personal development, and pretty much anything else you can think of.
So, once you have something to offer, you need to create the actual presentation. Another way to think of this is “How do I explain what I do for people so they can decide to buy from me?”.
This is one of the reasons I love email marketing. I set up my autoresponder to automatically follow up with any interested prospects. How? I wrote a series of emails designed to go out to anyone that requests the information. The letters get sent no matter where I am and no matter what I am doing. You can set up your autoresponder campaign to send out sales letters, training information, updates, special offers, announcements, etc… The messages can give full details, answer common questions, direct the reader to an order form or your business location, etc… It’s really like having an automated lead generation and follow up team working for you 24 hours a day.
Once I had my letters written, I had to have a way for folks to request my information so they could receive my letters. To do that, I set up what we call a capture page. The capture page I use is pretty simple. It has a headline, some descriptive text, and asks for the visitor’s name and email address. Any time a visitor wants to know more about my offer, all they have to do is fill out the form. From there, my autoresponder takes over.
Once I have the offer, the letters, and the capture page, my next step is to drive traffic to the capture page. I use social media, free advertising, and paid advertising to let people know about my offer.
These are the List Building Basics:
1) Have the offer (what do you sell?)
2) Have a presentation (your emails)
3) Have your capture page ready.
4) Drive traffic to the capture page.
No matter what you see being sold online, I have yet to see the exception to these basic principles. These list building basics have allowed me to do business around the world without having to report to a boss, go to an offer, drive across town for meetings, or any of that stuff.
Can you get fancy? Absolutely! After you master the basics, you may want to try all sorts of tricks and strategies. Just remember to always focus on and master the basics to create cash flow with email marketing.
