Reasons To Work From Home
What would it be like to work from home? Working from home has become a popular choice for many people, and with good reason. There are plenty of benefits to working from home, and in this article, we are going to take a look at 7 of them. Whether you are just looking in to the idea or ready to make the jump, this article can help point you in the right direction.
Let’s begin!
1) No Commute
One of the biggest reasons to work from home is getting rid of that commute. Many people spend hours of their week driving to and from work. When you work from home, you can have that “20 second commute” walking to your home office. No more battling rush hour traffic. If you drive just 30 minutes to work and 30 minutes back home, a 5 day work week translates to picking up 5 hours back in your life when you work from home. If that is a 1 hour drive, you can get 10 hours back in your life when you work from home.
2) More Time With Family
When my kids were still living at home, I valued family time. It would be as simple as being around to help with homework or watch a movie. It could get as involved as playing in school recitals or coaching basketball. Working from home allowed me the flexibility to be home for my family. Now that my kids are all grown up and moved out, they tell me how much they appreciated me being around.
3) Increased Productivity
This can vary from one person to the next. For me, the ability to work without distractions from chatty co-workers helps me be more productive when I work from home.
4) Fewer distractions
No inter-office politics. No being pulled in to pointless meetings and discussions. Less distractions mean you can be more focused on the actual work to be done.
5) Improved work/life balance
This work/life balance thing can be challenging. One one side, I have the option and ability to spend more time with my wife. On the other side, my office is always just around the corner and when I have an idea, I can just slide over to the desk to work. This one takes a little more discipline to shut the work side down when it’s time to focus on the personal life.
6) Increased sense of control
The option to control at least some of your schedule helps give you an increased sense of control. Working from home doesn’t mean “work when you want to” but it does give you the flexibility you need. When I was coaching basketball, I appreciated the ability to shift my schedule. We could go out and win a nationals basketball tournament and then … this was the trade off … go back to the hotel and get my work done. I probably worked more hours overall but I loved being able to move my schedule around as needed.
7) Cost savings
There are quite a few ways to save money when you work from home. Less fuel costs. Lower vehicle maintenance costs. Less money spent on eating out. Depending on your work, you could spend less money on clothes, too.
