How is online marketing like online dating? Imagine scrolling through your favorite online dating app and just sending random marriage proposals to complete strangers. This is how I see a lot of people approaching their online marketing and their results are fairly predictable.
Online dating and online marketing are similar in that you start with a pre-determined objective. With online dating, you are definitely seeing some sort of romantic connection but if you start by going straight for the “close”, you are going to get a LOT of rejection.
In online marketing, your pre-determine objective is to get the sale. Sadly, I see lot of folks who think they are doing online marketing when they really just randomly sending visitors directly to a sales page.
This is the online marketing version of walking in to a bar and asking someone to marry you or just scrolling through your dating app and asking for marriage.
If you really want to experience online marketing success, have your visitors land on a page that shows them how you can help them solve a problem. What can your product, service, or opportunity do for them? Make sure your page explains that basic idea. Then, show them how to get more information. Like asking for their name and number at the club, your site should have a capture form where someone can enter their name and email at a minimum. This is their way of saying, “I’m interested enough to ask about your offer.”. It is not a sale. It’s an indication of interest.
Your next goal is to have your autoresponder begin following up with the person that completed the form. This is where your followup messages begin showing your prospect how your product or service can help them. You can share about your own experiences and how the product or service has helped you and others.
Within those messages is where you would ultimately ask for the sale. As eager as you may be to get the sale, if your prospect doesn’t feel they know you, like you, and can trust you, it is highly unlikely you are going to get the sale.
