How Email Marketing Works
Do you find yourself wondering how email marketing works? You’re not alone. This article is designed to help you get a better understanding of email marketing and how you can use it to build your business.
The key is to recognize that, no matter how much things change … how “fancy” things become … how “technical” the world may look, the basic principles of marketing and advertising have stayed the same. Headlines, images, and copy all work together to generate interest and spur the reader to take action. Newspapers as far back as the days of Benjamin Franklin applied these basic principles.
Look through any newspaper, magazine, social media site, web site, blog, etc… and you will see the same basic things happening. You will see headlines designed to capture your attention and get you to click to read more. You will see copy designed to create excitement, passion, fear, or hope. You will see a call to action that tells you how to learn more, get help, try it out, get a free sample, or buy now.
And, for many businesses, this is where email marketing begins. That call to action is, quite often, an offer to fill out a form to request a free report, a trial offer, a download, a white paper, a pdf, a phone call, etc…
When you fill out that form on a company’s web site, there are a few things that happen:
- You receive the report, pdf, sample, call, invitation, download, etc… that you asked for.
- You are added to that company’s email marketing list.
Have you ever filled out a form to receive discounts and special offers from a favorite restaurant? That restaurant is using email marketing to stay in touch with you, send you offers, coupons, etc… to keep you coming back in. When you filled out that form, you were entered in to their email marketing database.
Have you ever filled out a form on a web site for one of your favorite bands? They offered to send you free updates on upcoming concerts, events, new releases, etc… right? You are now in their email marketing database.
These are good examples of how email marketing works and, hopefully, you are seeing how your business can benefit from doing the same thing.
If your business has a product to sell, a service to provide, information to share, you should be using email marketing. Your web site should have a form that lets you offer samples, information, etc… in exchange for visitors giving you their name and email address.
Your autoresponder should be set up to begin following up with every request, sharing information, providing tips, and building rapport.
