It’s Time For an Email List Check-up!

email listWhile we enjoy the fact that email marketing is a form of “marketing automation” in action, it is important to check in on your list every once in a while. There are a few things to check on and none of them really take much time.

The first thing you want to look at for your email list check-up: Are you getting new subscription requests? Building your email list is a critical step in effective email marketing. Your ads should be driving visitors to your capture page. Your offer, copy, and form should be helping you see new subscriptions being added to your list.

I check my campaigns a few times each week to makes sure I see new subscription requests coming in. If I don’t, then I start looking at why. Are my ads still running? If so, I may try some new copy, new headlines, or new call-to-action. I will also run new ad campaigns. Advertising is how we get visitors to our capture forms. The offer entices those visitors to fill out the form.  When they do that, your list grows.

The second item on your email list check-up: Unsubscribes Having people remove themselves from your email list is a fact of life. It happens to us all. Folks lose interest. Their needs change. Their email address is no longer valid. So, seeing a few removals will be normal. But … if you see a big increase in remove requests, you may need to check your messages. Is your message on point? Is it still relevant? Is the information helpful? Is the message complete? Well written? Take time to double check that your use of the Tokens is correct to properly personalize your messages. Little tweaks can make a big difference.

The third item for your email list check-up: Open/Click Rate Is your message being opened? If it isn’t, how can you adjust your subject line to get a better open rate? Once the message is opened, are readers clicking your links? How can you tell? Check out our Email List Segmentation Tools article to see how to track your open and click rates for your messages.

Spend a few minutes giving your email list a check up to make sure you are getting the most out of your email marketing and growing your business.

This is true for all of us, Robin! We get in to our habits and steps get skipped. It’s always good for us to go back, review, and pick up what we have forgotten along the way.
